Unless you attend a County Board meeting, you may not be aware of accommodations that are provided to people in the audience to assist them in understanding the proceedings of the board during a particular meeting. Sign language and/or Spanish language interpreters are present for the first two hours of every Saturday Board meeting, from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. Persons needing interpretation services are encouraged to call Aubryn Bednar, Acting Clerk of the Board at least 3 days before the meeting at 703-228-3130 (TTY 703-228-4611), but can also see the Clerk the morning of the meeting. Interpretation services are also available for recessed meetings if requested at least one day in advance by calling the above number.
All meetings are available on Channel 74 on Comcast Cable of Arlington, with repeats shown Mondays and Thursdays at 5 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. Carryover meetings will be repeated the following Monday at 7:00 p.m. Channel 74 schedules are provided in pamphlets available at Arlington public libraries, or by calling 703-228-3270 (TTY 703-228-4611). (All of this information and action by the Board is available at Arlington"s governmental website, www.arlingtonva.us)
At their February 23rd meeting, the County Board considered a development proposal for the site of former Bob Peck Chevrolet (corner of N. Glebe and Wilson Blvd.) to build "medium office, hotel" along Glebe Road, with apartments to a maximum of 50 feet on the western and southwestern area of the property.
Other items listed on their agenda included:
approval or renewal of use permits of several day care programs,
the Teen Parenting program to be located across from the Education Center on N. Quincy
Street,
and conversion of office space at 1901 N. Fort Myer Dr. to higher education under the auspices of
Diplomatic Language Services.
Northern Virginia Family Service, Inc. should be moving into 1801 N. George Mason Dr. (the old site of the Department of Human Services, next to Virginia Hospital Center), if their lease with the County is approved by the County Board.
The Board will review a conceptual plan for mixed-use redevelopment through a public/private partnership for the Arlington Mill Community Center (the old Safeway on Columbia Pike, near Four Mile Run). The plan to be reviewed included 200 dwelling units, a 30,000 square foot community center, 10,000 square foot gymnasium, and retail space of approximately 2,000 square feet. The approval of this use permit will be determined at a later County Board meeting.
Polling places are moved because of construction or anticipated construction, and the following locations
were approved at the February Board meeting:
(1) Fairlington Precinct 012 from the Fairlington Villages
Community Center, 3005 South Abingdon Street, back to its permanent location at the Fairlington
Community Center, 3308 South Stafford Street; and
(2) Overlee Knolls Precinct 017 from Walter Reed
School, 1644 North McKinley Road, to Resurrection Lutheran Church, 6201 Washington Boulevard, while
Walter Reed School is under reconstruction.
Of historic note, the Board was anticipated to approve an agreement with New York City's Museum of Modern Art for temporary loan of the historic Clifford M. Krowne Lustron House, originally located at 5201 South 12th Street, and donated to Arlington in April 2006. The disassembled components will be transported to New York for their use in an exhibition about prefabricated architecture scheduled from June-November 2008. Maybe the League should plan a field trip!
THE JANUARY REPORT: On January 1, the Arlington County Board began their new year of business and elected Walter Tejada as the Chair, and Barbara Favola as the vice-chair. Mary Hynes joined the board for the first time, along with Jay Fisette and Chris Zimmerman. Our County Board is elected at large, with each serving a four-year term.
The following schedule of County Board meetings was adopted, with the first date being the regular meeting on Saturday mornings at 8:30 a.m., and the second date is in parentheses and designates the recessed meeting, usually on Tuesdays at 3 p.m. The board meetings are held in room 307 of 2100 Clarendon Boulevard, or #1 Courthouse Plaza. An agenda is available at www.arlingtonva.us and you may contact a board member at countyboard@arlingtonva.us. The January 1st speeches of each board member are available online as well. In addition, a schedule of walking town meetings will be available soon: a very good and close-up opportunity to meet with board members in your neighborhood, where they get a close-up and personal view of us.
